French Design studio combines technology + craft to manufacture colorful 3D printed watch collection

Who wouldn’t love to use 3D printed accessories in a normal basis?

Lyon-based design studio notaroberto-boldrini just launched a new project after the acquisition of the Zortrax M200 3D printer. Dubbed under the name of .STEP, this is a 3D printed watch collection that combines technology and craft process.

About the creation of Watch.Step 3D printed watch

Simon Boldrini and Loïc Notaroberto, both with Italian origins, met in Brussels while both were working at the Sylvain Willenz Design Office, an industrial design studio. One year later, both Boldrini and Notaroberto moved on to La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland (capital of watchmaking), where they worked for two years at Atelier Oï.

Now, inspired by pop culture, the duo decided to make their own product and caring for every single step of the manufacturing process:

Creators of the watch.step aim to “reinvestigate its philosophy and aesthetics with a pure spirit, using new fields and mixing materials”. Another of their main purposes is to show modern designers about the endless possibilities of using technologies like 3D printing in their products.

Notaroberto-Boldrini uses 3D printing to create and assemble, by themselves, the different components of the timepieces.

“The project is a cross between new technology and craft process. We use the 3D printer to create the different components that we assemble ourselves. The final product is the result of a work exclusively carried out in the studio.”

Notaroberto-Boldrini actually designed two versions of its 3D printed watch, the Watch.step “Pop” and the Watch.step “Fancy”. While the first version comes in vibrant colors, the watch step fancy characterizes by its more traditional color palette. Both pop and fancy are unisex models with a quartz movement and a nylon strap.

Watch.STEEP is only 35 euros a piece and customers can choose from a variety of colors, including black, pink, yellow, green, taupe, bordeau, kaki, and ivory. Any of these are definitely a nice gift for your son or daughter (but I must admit I’d like to get one of these for my date as well).
