Cobra Golf is once again pushing the boundaries of golf club design with the launch of two new additions to its 3D-printed iron lineup: the 3DP MB and 3DP X. These tour-inspired models are engineered for elite players who demand precision, feel, and performance from their irons.
3D Printing in Golf Club Design
3D printing, or additive manufacturing, has been steadily making its mark in the golf industry. Cobra was one of the first major golf brands to embrace this technology, using it to create complex internal structures that are difficult or impossible to achieve with traditional manufacturing methods. The result is a new generation of golf clubs that offer enhanced performance, optimized weight distribution, and improved feel.
The company’s initial foray into 3D-printed irons began with the KING 3D Printed Series, which included putters and irons featuring intricate lattice structures. These designs allowed Cobra to fine-tune the center of gravity and increase forgiveness without compromising on aesthetics or performance.
Introducing the 3DP MB and 3DP X Irons
The new 3DP MB (Muscle Back) and 3DP X irons are the latest evolution in Cobra’s additive manufacturing journey. Both models are designed with input from Cobra’s tour staff and are aimed at highly skilled players who prioritize control and shot-shaping ability.
3DP MB: This model is a classic muscle back iron with a compact shape and minimal offset. It’s forged from 1025 carbon steel for a soft, responsive feel. The standout feature is the 3D-printed medallion in the cavity, which helps fine-tune sound and vibration for a more satisfying impact. The MB is ideal for players who want maximum workability and feedback.
3DP X: The X model is a slightly more forgiving option, blending the precision of a player’s iron with added stability. It features a cavity-back design with a 3D-printed lattice structure that optimizes weight distribution. This allows for a lower center of gravity and improved launch conditions, making it suitable for elite players who want a bit more forgiveness without sacrificing control.
Performance and Tour Validation
Both the 3DP MB and 3DP X irons have been tested and validated by Cobra’s tour professionals, including players on the PGA Tour. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with many praising the irons’ feel, consistency, and ability to shape shots with precision.
The use of 3D printing in these irons allows Cobra to achieve design elements that would be impossible with traditional forging or casting. For example, the internal lattice structures in the 3DP X help redistribute mass to the perimeter of the clubhead, increasing MOI (moment of inertia) and stability on off-center hits.
Availability and Custom Fitting
The 3DP MB and 3DP X irons are available through Cobra’s custom fitting program, allowing players to tailor the specs to their swing and preferences. This includes options for shaft type, lie angle, grip, and set composition. Given the premium nature of these irons, they are expected to appeal primarily to low-handicap golfers and professionals.
As 3D printing continues to evolve, Cobra’s commitment to innovation ensures that golfers at the highest level have access to the most advanced equipment available. The 3DP MB and 3DP X represent a significant step forward in the fusion of traditional craftsmanship and cutting-edge technology.
