MakerBot Gets GREENGUARD Certification for Industrial-Grade 3D Printing in the Office

MakerBot, a Stratasys firm, has gained GREENGUARD Certification from UL,

a global safety science leader, for the MakerBot Clean AirTM System with METHOD X.

When printing with MakerBot ToughTM material,

The MakerBot METHOD®, MakerBot METHOD X®, and MakerBot SKETCHTM 3D printers obtained GREENGUARD Certifications, as did the Clean Air System with METHOD X when printing with ABS, PC-ABS,

and Nylon materials.
The Clean Air System, a dual-filtration smart-controlled system for the METHOD platform,

solves one of the most significant issues with printing engineering materials in an office setting by adding an extra

layer of protection against 3D printing pollutants.

Clean Air has a best-in-class two-layer filtration system that includes a HEPA filter for

protection against ultrafine particles (UFPs) and an activated carbon filter for protection against VOCs and aromas.

The technology takes into account ambient variables,

chamber temperature, and model material to keep METHOD’s print environment in sync with its surroundings.

Certification is the latest in Stratasys and MakerBot’s continued initiatives to enhance industry safety, sustainability, and compliance.

The news follows MakerBot’s recent debut of MakerBot RapidRinseTM,

a fast-dissolving water-soluble support material that eliminates the need for caustic chemicals and additional post-processing equipment.

The METHOD and SKETCH 3D printers come with features

that make 3D printing safer, such as enclosed build chambers

that limit access to the build plate while printing is in progress.

SKETCH also has a built-in particle filter, making it suitable for classroom 3D printing.

Eco-friendliness



Manufacturers of low-emitting indoor items, furniture, and materials can get

GREENGUARD Certification,

which is a globally recognized product emissions certification and labelling scheme. UL GREENGUARD Certified products have been scientifically verified to meet some of the world’s most stringent third-party chemical emissions criteria.

In a controlled exposure chamber,

the Clean Air System with METHOD X was tested for UFPs and VOCs following ANSI/CAN/UL 2904.1.

Additional study studies revealed that UFPs were reduced by up to 100%, while total VOCs were reduced by up to 64%.

When printing ABS materials,

specific compounds that are harmful to human health showed a considerable reduction in emissions when using Clean Air. Emission rates and predicted office concentrations for all pollutants of concern were also below acceptable values.
