It is the 2016 Presidential elections in the USA, and if there ever was a time for political statements, now is that time.

Obama dildo

The Head of State

In the 2013 State of the Union address, president Obama announced his support for 3D printing.

If knew how some right wing designers would use it, he may have reconsidered his support.

For 3D printers, there is a certain naivete` in the community. We like to think that 3D printing is a wholesome, technically challenging art form. We are communal and open with the digital files for our designs. Our community is full of bright prosthetic hands for children and limbs for pets.

But there is an dark undercurrent to our utopia of creation. Among the taboo topics  of 3D printing, politics is up there with guns and sex toys.

Few in the 3D printing community want to make a political statement with 3D printing. It’s like the community is self-censoring in order to avoid drawing bad PR to 3D printing. Others might think “ Stan, how dare you sully our art with politics”!

Ars politica (Art is Politics)

3D printing is just the newest medium to express classic political discontent. Graffiti from the ruins of Pompeii could be confused for the graffiti you will find today.

Same old chicken scratch

Artist have used every media of art to make political statements. From crass graffiti to master paintings like Picasso Guernica, art should makes a political statement.

With 3D printing, such works of art can be quickly shared, produced, and parodied around the world.

You’re a Dick ON a Dick

There have been a few brave souls that have challenged the taboos of 3D printing. Fernando Sosa of Florida sent shock waves through the 3D printing world when he designed the Donald Trump butt plug.

Trumo where he belongs.

As news of this political phallus spread, others responded in the truest form of political discourse. Soon all the presidential hopefuls could penetrate the bodies along with the legal rights of their constituents.

How you Can Contribute

3D printing is the newest frontier of digital technology. The US government has not been able to censor the files for protected IP or guns.

3D modelers and printers are now in the wild west of free speech. We are as free as we will ever be to make political statements with 3D printing.

In the spirit of political discussion, I have designed six (6) challenge coins in TinkerCAD that you can 3D print and tweak at home. They are released as Creative commons Attribution share alike NON commercial. They will be released through TinkerCAD here  and through Thingiverse here . You can print them coin sized, put your own sticker on them, or glue a safety pin on the back to wear.

DISCLAIMER: Stan is a disillusioned Green Party voter that feels the current two-party system is like choosing which STD you get. There are other political parties, and when the GOP self-destructs he foresees a few more parties. The opinions expressed are those of the author alone.
